Goritz against Martin is the match to watch

Consistency is the key to catch the 2013 Hobie Cat 16 European title. The most consistent teams, in both strong winds and light breezes, arrive to the final day of the Open Championship in Cagliari with a firm grip on the top three spots and similar chances to close in first place. Jens Goritz and Kerstin Wichardt of Germany against Orion Martin and Charlotte Hilliard of France will be the match to follow. They are divided by only one point after 8 races, at the end of a day with three not easy races and wind below 10 knots.

Gold fleet 1st race abandoned under severe conditions

Mistral up to 28-30 knots pushed the Hobie Cat 16 Gold fleet back to shore, today in Cagliari. The first race of the 2013 Open European Championship was abandoned when the first teams were just in sight of the finish line. A big disappointment for the 20 per cent of the fleet that was enjoying the challenge and literally flying on the water, but for too many it was not fun at all.

Trine Bentzen-Nicolaj Bjornholt, 2013 Youth Champions

A larger-than-usual Gold Fleet at the Hobie Cat 16 European Championships in Cagliari. Not 64 but 71 or maybe 72 boats will race for the title along the Poetto beach until Saturday. The announcement from Class president Andy Dinsdale, after the prize-giving ceremony for the Youth, Masters and Spi Cup winners, was a nice surprise for competitors at the end of a long day. Extra sails will arrive with a night flight from France - Hobie Europe was sending more after the first shipment of 64 plus some spare.

A close battle for the Youth title in Cagliari

Just one day to go and the race for the Youth title at the Hobie Cat 16 European Championships in Cagliari could not be tighter. Trine Bentzen (1-5-1) with crew Nicolaj Bjornholt is first again. If she had a bad day on Sunday, Monday hasn't been any better for Daniel Bjornholt and Sofie Slotsgaard (7-1-7). Now anything could happen, with just one point separating the two teams from Denmark. The first day of the Open qualifiers gave an idea of how interesting the Gold race will be: 36 highly competitive teams on the water, very aggressive starts, close finishes. Roberto Caddeo and Pierpaolo Massoni of Italy lead after three races.

Ciabatti-Mereu (Masters) take the first title

The first Hobie Cat 16 european title for 2013 will not leave Sardinia. Italian champion (and home team) Antonello Ciabatti and Luisa Mereu secured the Masters event, with little room for discussion. Two victories in the only two races for the second day of the Championship in Cagliari killed any hope that Jens Goritz and Juliane Bruggemann still had to catch the leaders. No surprises from the EHCA Open Spi Cup: Orion Martin and Charlotte Hilliard from France lost their first race of the event but even with that were the clear winners. Daniel Bjornholt and Sofie Slotsgaard are still leading in the Youth Championship.

France, Italy and Denmark lead after four races

Denmark for the Youth title, with the Bjornholt brothers competing against each other. Italy and Germany among the Masters, with Ciabatti-Mereu ahead of Goritz-Brüggemann. Definitely France for the EHCA Spi Cup, after the four bullets scored by Martin-Hilliard. After one day of races, the Hobie Cat European Championships are already giving an idea about the flags to prepare for the podium ceremonies in these three events.

A date with the Hobie fleet in Cagliari - every 10 years

No need for long speeches to declare open the 2013 edition of the Hobie Cat 16 European Championships, that are bringing to Cagliari some 75 boats from ten nations and four continents. Just a friendly welcome to the Hobie fleet from Efisio Pintor, president of Windsurfing Club Cagliari. A few words to recall that this will be the third edition to take place in Sardinia after 1994 and 2004 - and that some competitors in the 2013 entry list were here 20 years ago.

Ferry rates and October discounts

Competitors coming to Cagliari in October for the 2013 HC16 Europeans will be able to claim a 30% reduction - for passengers, car and trailer - on the Tirrenia - Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione ferries, for all the routes connecting Sardinia to mainland Italy.
